Four Reasons to Wish Your Dentist Happy National Dentist Day

From keeping you pain-free to telling great jokes (with your mouth propped open, usually), dentists give us lots of reasons to be thankful. Here are four reasons to thank your dentist on March 6, National Dentist Day – or anytime after.

  1. They help prevent, detect, and/or halt dental disease. Dentists are trained to look for early signs of tooth decay, gum disease, and oral cancer. Severe gum disease can increase your risk of coronary artery disease,1 so your dentist really has the power to help prolong your life.
  2. A dentist can give you whiter teeth in a couple of 30- to 60-minute office visits. An in-office bleaching makes your teeth whiter and brighter for up to five years.2 Other whitening options aren’t as quick or effective.
  3. They can give your child an early start on good oral health. Your child’s first dental visit should occur by age one, or six months after the first tooth erupts. It’s like a well-child visit – but to your dentist. The dentist gives parents oral-health information and helps your child get used to dental appointments.3 It’s the best way to ensure that parents and children understand the importance of oral health.
  4. They keep you pain-free. Dentists solve annoying tooth problems  and are extremely skilled at pain prevention.4 Many dentists also incorporate relaxation techniques into the exam room, including television and even aromatherapy.5
